I have just spent the past week in the town of Longmont as a member of the Colorado National Guard in order to help the victims of the recent flooding. All I can say is wow, what an experience. It was at times heartbreaking and at others, heart lifting to see people who have gone through so much, some who literally lost every worldly possession they had and also to see a community pull together, put on their galoshes and work gloves and transform what was, on Saturday, nothing short of a warzone, into a living working city again. I also have to say thank you to that amazing community for the love, appreciation and cooperation and patience that they showed to me, and continue to show the Longmont Police Department and the Guard members who are still there as they to get their lives back to normal again.
There is still a lot of work to be done as construction crews race to get roads serviceable against the impending winter weather and home and business owners are still not able to reach their belongings. Water and utility services are still out in many areas and the flood heads eastward towards Nebraska. These people still need our thoughts and prayers as the struggle for them continues.
